A place steeped in thousand-year-old history extends over nearly 22 hectares on the edge of the Giara di Serri plateau: this is the Sanctuary of Santa Vittoria, which arose during the Nuragic period, when the area was used for defensive purposes, as evidenced by the presence of an archaic nuraghe and a multi-tower nuraghe. Later, probably between the late Bronze Age and the early Iron Age, the area became an important place of worship to which communities from the entire surrounding region would converge.

The beating heart of the Santa Vittoria Nuragic Sanctuary is represented by the well-temple dedicated to the cult of water, built with massive basalt blocks and a testament to the devotion of local communities: pilgrims took part in religious ceremonies and paid homage to the deities by offering gifts of various kinds. Among these, particularly notable are the bronze figurines depicting human beings, animals and objects, alongside amber necklaces and metal objects.

Among the most significant monuments at the site are the open-air temple, the festival enclosure and the residential area, which contains the largest Nuragic meeting hut ever found in Sardinia: stone structures that offer a fascinating glimpse into the past, the rich history and the complex culture that characterised the area over time.

The ancient bond with spirituality and devotion has permeated the atmosphere of the sanctuary over the centuries, as evidenced by the presence of Byzantine burials and the establishment of the first small church, dedicated to Santa Maria della Vittoria. September 11th remains a sacred day, when the community of Serri gathers in a processional cortege to honour the effigy of the Saint, renewing the ties between the divine and the earthly and celebrating the times when agriculture and livestock farming dominated daily life.

Thanks to the pioneering efforts of Antonio Taramelli between 1907 and 1929, the archaeological site was brought to light, revealing the events that shaped this place over the centuries; subsequent studies and excavations involving other archaeologists continue to shed new light on the history of one of the most important cultic complexes of Nuragic Sardinia. Some of the original artefacts unearthed during these early investigations can be admired at the exhibition hosted in the former Monte Granatico premises in Serri, which traces a full century of archaeological research at the site.
